This purpose of this policy is to inform students, faculty, and staff of the administrative steps required to successfully register and complete the thesis component of any graduate degree. Additionally, in order to ensure fairness and consistency, this policy clearly defines the rules and restrictions concerning thesis supervisors and second readers, as well as all information concerning conflicts of interest.
This policy describes the rules that govern the awarding of advanced standing credit. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all AUP students are treated equally and that students are not required to repeat acceptable course work that has been completed prior to enrolling at AUP.
Students wishing to take a temporary leave of absence from The American University of Paris for any given reason (family or financial emergency, personal health, etc.) are required to adhere to AUP’s Leave of Absence procedure. Students are encouraged to discuss possible academic, personal and financial implications with their academic advisor, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and their financial aid counselor.
Students wishing to withdraw from all registered courses in any given semester are required to adhere to AUP’s University Withdrawal procedure. During this process, the student works with the Office of Student Development to identify the reasons for withdrawal, as well as possible academic, personal and financial implications. The Office of Student Development also assists with communication with relevant University Offices.

AUP is committed to ensuring student success. When extenuating circumstances prevent completion of a course, a student may be granted a temporary “Incomplete” grade and extended deadline to complete coursework. However, to ensure that students complete their degrees in a reasonable amount of time, this policy specifies the maximum number of incompletes that a graduate student is permitted to have at the end of each semester.
By specifying the maximum time permitted for graduate students to complete their degrees, this policy ensures that all students are consistently and fairly given a realistic amount of time to graduate while upholding reasonable standards of academic rigor.
These policies and procedures guide students’ presentation of their final theses. Regulation of the presentation of the final thesis at the graduate level helps to ensure that students respect French and International Intellectual Property laws as well as academic best practices of scholarly work. This policy also helps to create a collection of theses for the University Library.
Library collection development is a community process involving faculty, students, staff and library personnel. These guidelines help determine what print (books, periodicals), online resources, and multimedia material to acquire and which gifts to accept.
